- Apr 93:00 PMAuthor Talk and Signing by Dr. Christopher B. Strain | National Library WeekDriving Lessons: A Road Trip through American Travel Literature Author Talk and Signing by Dr. Christopher B. Strain Wednesday, April 9 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm MacArthur Campus Library Christopher B. Strain Weaves the author’s own four-month cross-country sojourn in a VW van with thoughts on travel narratives across the history of American literature: In Driving Lessons, Christopher B. Strain embarks on a classic American road trip—both literal and cultural. Amid a personal and professional crossroads in the summer of 1998, Strain purchased a 1972 Volkswagen Westfalia and set off on a cross-country journey to reconnect with himself and the nation he studies. Along the way, he explored how race, class, and gender shape road trip experiences, weaving his travels with reflections on American travel writing and history. Part memoir, part literary analysis, Driving Lessons is a thoughtful and engaging look at the power and meaning of the American road trip.
