A Florida Atlantic University associate professor, Kim Dunn, Ph.D., has been elected as chair of the Advisory Council of Faculty Senates (ACFS) on the Florida State University System’s Board of Governors (BOG).
Dunn, an associate professor in the School of Accounting within the College of Business, is also the former faculty senate president at FAU, and is founder and board chair of the nonprofit organization, Champions Empowering Champions. She will fulfill a one-year term ending May 31, 2026, and is eligible for a consecutive term pending re-election.
“I am honored to have been elected by my colleagues to serve on the Board of Governors for the State University System of Florida,” said Dunn. “This role represents a significant opportunity to contribute to the advancement of higher education in our state. I am committed to working collaboratively to ensure that our universities continue to provide exceptional education and foster innovation for the benefit of all Floridians.”
As ACFS chair, Dunn will serve as the faculty governor on the BOG, working closely with its staff to understand policy issues and represent faculty concerns and input regarding those issues. She will speak publicly and vote on a variety of issues during BOG meetings and talk with faculty around the system to hear and understand concerns and issues, helping to resolve them where she can. She will also meet with leaders statewide – legislators, businesspeople, administrators, donors, and/or alumni – to advocate for faculty in Florida and highlight their successes in student education, research and in the community.
“We are proud to see Dr. Dunn representing Florida Atlantic as chair of the Advisory Council of Faculty Senates on the Board of Governors,” said FAU President Adam Hasner. “She is deeply committed to advancing higher education and shared governance and has been an asset to Florida Atlantic as a trustee. I look forward to the positive impact she will now have on the entire state of Florida.”
Dunn also has held many positions at FAU, including faculty advisor to Beta Alpha Psi; NCAA faculty athletics representative; director of the School of Accounting; and director of the Accounting Scholars Program. Her accolades include the Beta Alpha Psi Teaching Excellence Award; Alumni Association Degree of Difference Award; College of Business Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award; College of Business Dean’s Distinguished Service Fellow; Steward Distinguished Professorship; College of Business Master Teacher designation; and Conference-USA SAAC Choice Award. She also was ranked No. 41 in the nation for her publications in accounting education research.
A first-generation college student, Dunn earned a Ph.D. from Georgia State University; a Master of Accountancy degree from the University of Alabama; and a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. She is especially proud of the Associates of Arts degree that she earned in the Florida College System at St. Petersburg Junior College, now St. Petersburg State College.
The ACFS, an organization created and mandated by the Florida State Constitution, is comprised of faculty senate leaders from all 12 State University System institutions. It establishes the means for faculty participation in the process of statewide public university governance. The fundamental purpose of the ACFS is to work toward better and higher quality educational opportunities in the system of public four-year colleges and universities overseen by the Florida BOG.
